Assassin Bug

Found this on the Dwarf Nectrine tree today. It was lurking within the foliage waiting for something to eat which it is bound to find as that tree is surrounded by volunteer plant foliage:

Assassin Bug

This bug feeds on caterpillars, mirids, stink bugs, beetles and bees.

They stab their victims and inject a paralysing toxin that also pre-digests the prey’s internal organs. They then suck out the innards. Nice!

They are capable of piercing human skin so handle with care!

Peach Tree Problems

I’m getting problems with the tips of the Peach tree again. The new shoots are dieing and there is sap oozing from the tree as it tries to protect itself.

I lost all the fruit on this tree earlier this year and I put that down to Fruit Fly at the time. Now with this problem and looking into it some more, that may not be the case and I have another bad bug in the garden!

Orchard preparations begin…

This is going to be one long job! Decided to start clearing some of the gravel today after the sun had moved off this area of the garden. The below are the achievements of about 30 mins of shovelling!

The palms have gone!

Preparations for the next phase of the garden are going well. I needed to get rid of some palms in the corner of the garden to make space and provide light.
